Ontario Guild of Town Criers

Provincial Championship

July 28, 2018 Amherst Island

The event is the only major competition in North America.  Criers from 16 municipalities will be coming here to add pomp and ceremony to the Community Market, the Garden Party and the Island.  Town crying dates back to the Spartan runners in the Greek-Roman-Sparta-Troy era of history.

Traditionally the Town Crier brought the breaking news and Royal messages to the people.  Prior to mass media, they were the source of news.  In modern times they are symbolic of past ages and formally represent their municipality.  They can even act as mayor in extreme circumstances.

The contest will have local residents as judges and there will be three cries.  Cry 1 is at 9:30 am at the community market with the theme being community markets.  Cry 2 is at approximately 11:15 at the Dry Stone Wall across from the school and will be themes Loyalist(s).  The third cry is at the Garden Party at 2:00 called Gardens, Parties, Garden Parties.  It will be fun, audible, and laudable and people will be free to come and go as they choose.

We are seeking to accommodate as many Criers as possible right here on the Island and are looking to billet Criers and their spouses.  Criers may need accommodation for one night and perhaps an additional night, a second night Saturday at a cost.  The all call is for Friday July 27.

It takes special people to open their homes and hearts to visitors. We are looking for a variety of accommodation – whether in-house suites, rooms with private bath, rooms with shared bathroom facilities etc.  Visitors may require accommodation for one night.  We hope to provide free accommodation (breakfast included) but will also consider offering accommodation at a small charge for room and breakfast.

If you are interested in helping with this exciting Island initiative this summer or if you have questions about billeting please contact Judy Bierma judybierma@gmail.com  or 613 985 1029.

Thanks for your consideration!
